Tell us your opinion on creativity and originality.

Creativity is something so elusive and spiritual for me. I believe that every person is creative and original, but in a world where we constantly are struggling with comparison, finding our originality through creativity can be difficult.

I, for one, still believe I am evolving in my creativity and that I always will be. It is something that will never be fully realized, but that is the beautiful and mysterious journey of creativity.

Tell us the beginning of your passion for music.

I’ve always had a deep love for music since I was a young girl. My dad was a singer (and still is) and I grew up singing in choirs and playing instruments.

I really got the bug for music when I hit high school and began doing a lot of musical theatre and stage work but didn’t know that I wanted to create my own music until my early 20s.

Elaborate on how you make sure the quality of your sound is high.

I am self-produced and sometimes it can feel like I am creating in a vacuum.

I love to get other artists and producers involved in little ways along each song’s journey because I really believe that creativity is collaborative.

So, getting feedback (and taking it with a grain of salt) and keeping my ears fresh listening to new music helps me to produce at a higher quality than I think I would otherwise.

Tell us how you get ideas to develop your songs.

It is different with every song, but typically I sit down to write with a blank slate and run through different sounds, beats, synths, etc. until something inspires me. Then, I will get either a melodic idea or lyrics from that sound and go from there.

.

.

.

Discuss your music background.

I grew up singing in choirs and in musicals and playing the flute. I knew I wanted to pursue music and went to college for an Opera Performance degree. I imagined I would be auditioning for Broadway shows or traveling around performing in musicals, but I really wanted to make my own music, my own sound. So, that’s what I began doing!

.

.

.

Tell us how you entertain the audience during a live performance.

I think it is important to engage with the audience. There is a beautiful mix between being elusive and mysterious but also creating a relationship to break down the wall between me and the audience. I think when you find a perfect balance between the two, you have an awesome live performance.

List the name of artists that have a similar sound to yours.

London Grammar, Lana Del Rey, Enya, Bjork, Bat For Lashes.

.

Tell us what inspires you to sing.

I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else and that is what inspires me! The fact that I have a gift and I want to share it with people inspires me.

.

.

.

Discuss how you develop your melody.

After I find a sound I like, I love to just riff over it several times and hit record. Then, once I find something that is interesting to me, I run with it!

.

.

.

Tell us how you master your songs after production.

It depends. As an indie artist, the internet can be a great and cost-efficient way to master a song these days if the quality is good.

I also have a few producer friends who master as well, and they will master my songs too.

.

.

Discuss how you get your songs to digital stores.

I use Noisehive, which is a distribution service based out of Australia.

.

.

.

Discuss how to generate income through music.

Making money in music isn’t easy. However, there is money to be made in syncing and licensing and of course, you can always have a number one hit. It’s harder and easier all at the same currently – everyone has the technology and outlets to get fans and make money, but the market is constantly flooded with new artists. So, finding how you connect to your audience is the best way to get fans and keep them…and fans = customers.

.

.

.

Tell us your piece of advice to a new artist.

Learn all you can! Collaborate! Write constantly! Brand yourself! Knowing your brand and who you are is key!

Go into details on this song.

“My Norwegian” details the whirlwind romance and ethereal connection between my husband and myself.

During production, I wanted to make sure the song encompassed the epic and heaven-like qualities that one experiences in new love, but also wanted to depict the playfulness of our relationship and our not-to-be-taken-too-seriously outlook on life.

The poignant, romantic strings and choral-like qualities in the vocals, juxtaposed against the lullaby, jazz-like feel emulates perfectly the story that we love to tell together, and about the love that we hope every human gets to experience in their lifetime.
